Memorizing scripture is not so that you will have a bigger gun - it is because Jesus will be more real to you!
There is never a time that my verse doesn't leap into the foreground when there is a problem or a nasty person in my day. That verse brings to the center of the mind the fact that my home is in heaven, and I am an alien here.
His name is The Word, and when I memorize, He occupies my thoughts. I have made it a pattern for my life, and all the believers I know who memorize scripture each day are learning to choose stability rather than groping for control, and are also learning the sweet release of not having to know what is going on.
The mind will go to the verse like gravity, but only when there is a fresh effort on a daily basis.
The point is not to say the whole Bible by memory, rather the point is to obey the Word and submit to the divine order to meditate on it constantly and to talk about it constantly. The only way to do that is to take a bit each day and repeat it until it has been memorized enough to remember for the day.
It is not critical to be able to say it tomorrow - we are not proving anything, but you will be amazed at the recall the Holy spirit will bring when those verses are needed.
There are no exceptions - it must be done.
